How much does it cost to buy a prepaid SIM?

How much does it cost to buy?
You can start with a S$8 hi-card which comes with a S$10 value. This should work with any phone comfortably. While SingTel only has 2G service today (correct as of 7 March 2009), it should not affect you much - I hope.

Buying one should not be too difficult, you should get one at convenience stores like 7-Elevens, Cheers, money/ currency exchangers, mobile phone stores etc.

Prices can start at $8, $18 or $28.

What are the basic charges?
You can use calls and SMS at the following rates
a. Local calls (calling Singapore numbers) - 16 cents per minute (Monday to Friday, 8am to 7.59pm) or 8 cents per minute otherwise
calls are charged by the 1st minute, then later by 30 seconds blocks.

b. Local SMS (sending to Singapore numbers) - flat rate of 5 cents per SMS
c. Global SMS (sending to international numbers) - flat rate of 15 cents per SMS.
*Global SMS to users of Telkomsel's prepaid card (simPATI) is 5 cents only.

d. You can use it for data or WAP surfing. See my other post

For more charges, see my post to get a better picture of what you should know.

  1. Are there any other onetime initial fees for the prepaid SIM cards? I recently bought a SIM card from a SingTel dealer and was charged S$58 for the prepaid Hi card for an initial S$10 balance. I am a tourist and am thinking the salesman may have taken advantage of me.
